What do you think of this?
Basically a large group of 25,000 or so Christian teenagers held a rally where they talked about being good Christians and spoke against violence and bad words in music and such. Where there was some good 'ole gay-bashing or not, I don't know, but the main thing is that there was no violence, it was an utterly peaceful rally.
So one of the local left-wing politicos decided to trash it as a disgusting facist rally that should not be in his city. This guy probably loves anti-Bush demonstrations, but can't take it when someone disagrees with him in his fair city. Well sorry, bud, but at least this rally was peaceful and held without hate (as far as I can tell).

I think it is as much the right of the city to voice an opinion of the things going on here as it is for the organizers of the rally to do so. The rally was not blocked or prevented or "untolerated" in any way.
It is true that this is an overwhelmingly progressive city; I have plenty of religious friends here who would describe themselves as liberal or progressive or simply "religious left." The group putting on this event appears to fall more in the conservative, religious right camp. As in the ones who espouse views of intolerence toward homosexuality, abstinence-only education, the elimination of legal abortion and reduced access to birth control. I'm proud that the elected representatives from my city are willing to stand up and say that this community does not support those views.
It's all well and good to defend your towns values. From what I had read, however, the guy seemed to imply that the rally was all about gay bashing and hate, whereas I don't think that''s what it was about at all. Maybe I misinterpreted his comments.
I wonder, when there's a protest that the guy agrees with, but it turns violent, does he say he doesn't want that sort of thing in his city, or does her rationalize it like so many people seem to rationalize violence these days?
He also called them fascist and disgusting. They cannot possibly be fasict because they don't in any way meet that definition. And most very religious Christians I have known shower every day and are anythign but disgusting.
The councilman had every right to say what he said, and I have every right to think of him as an intolerant prick. There's way too much one-way tolerance in this country.
Errggghhh. I rethought my position and would like to erase my comments, but blogger being blogger, it's making it really hard, so just ignore what I wrote :)
