This strikes me as a prank simply because it's too close to the "theories" that many science-fiction authors made up to be able to use FTL travel in their stories. It would be cool if Larry Niven's ideas on hyperspace turn out to be true, but it just seems too pat. But wouldn't it be cool if this worked out? It would certainly fit in with the singularity.

Today's my last day of work and their about to throw a party for me. I will blush a lot.
