Check out this column by Thomas Sowell, man, myth, legend, for more on why ebonics can only hurt, and can in no way ever help anyone. Except racial warlords playing the race card for monetary shakedowns.

We are dealing with a vernacular that is being clung to for cultural identity. This is pretty much true in any culture really, but it seems to be more accpetable if the family is from a different country. Its a delicate situation because you never want a student or a parent to feel ashamed or to take offense because you are correcting his/her child's grammar. Some parents can be very quick to claim that you are a racist teacher, and it's hard not to step on anyone's toes. Most teachers, including myself, remind the students that when we are in school we speak one way and we can speak anyway we want at home. If little Billy says, "She eat too much," you simply remind little billy that that is not appropriate for school, correct his mistake, and move on.

Is it really cultural identity, or ignorance among kids who don't realize how this will penalize them in the future, and apathy from parents who treat school as day care?

The blame cannot be placed on the child or his parent alone. The community as a whole needs to accept the limitations that using ebonics can place on their children. Allowing ebonics to be taught in schools is no way to treat the situation. Parents need to be educated about how ebonics can hurt their child's furture if they are unable to communicate in standard English as well. This takes time, money, and willing participants. Which low socioeconmic communities are lacking. Many work 3 jobs and have too many kids to count. And, some of them just dont care. Im not saying that i agree with having kids and not being to support them but thats just how it is. They cant always comeout to parent workshops when neccessary. And, don't forget that there are plenty of uppermiddle to upperclass white people that use public schools as a daycare/dumping ground for their kids to be babysat.

If they had been properly educated, they'd be able to count all their kids no matter how many they have!
