Back before the New Deal, America was seen as the land of opportunity, where any man or woman with a dream and a willingness to work hard could get ahead. Now recent studies are showing that economic mobility is dying in this country. One wonders at the connection. Perhaps all of those social programs that started during the New Deal and have been added to so much over the years are the cause of this lack of mobility. Perhps if had not given people so many chances to claim victimhood and depend on the tax dollars of others, be it through welfare, after school programs for pregnant teens, etc. etc. etc., then we might still be seen as the land of opportunity that we were before the left wing decided to try to legislate economic equality. Perhaps free market capitalism would have done exactly what many economists predicted, had we not put so may restrictions on it. We might be living in a country where you grow up, you work your ass off, and you can succeed no matter where you started, but instead we seem to have a country where you are born, you begin to take handouts unless you are rich, and you get so used to those handouts that you never learn the value of really hard work. We'll never know for sure, but I think it's pretty obvious where I stand....

Ben,

I'm sorry to hear that you no longer believe in the American dream. I have no problem with you criticizing the New Deal, it's your opinion, but most of what I have seen interprets the New Deal as a good thing that helped Americans ease out of the Great Depression and if nothing else give them hope. Not to mention the incredible things it did for our infrastructure; how many schools, libraries, and other public buildings (as well as the TVA) have you seen that have WPA inscribed on the side? You can thank the New Deal and FDR for that. I can't tell if you think that liberals (who overwhelmingly support government social programs) are either poor (which to you equals lazy) or rich people who have too big a heart. I am neither, and I think most liberals are the same as me. Many of the people you know are liberal, and how many can you honestly say fit into either category? My grandparents came here as poor immigrants without any formal education. Very similar to today's immigrants which you would like to bar from entering the country. They did not go on welfare, but they did work their butts off and save their money. They also were lucky enough not to have any disabilities to prevent them from working. They would definitely be considered upper class today, but they are still very liberal. They came here well after the New Deal was in place, so do you think so low of people that everyone who is poor is just a drain on the economy and has no dreams and no drive for success?

Dave, read what I wrote, listen to my theory. Evidence has shown that upward economic mobility has ben restricted more and more as the years wear on from the beginning of the New Deal. Why is it that before all of these quasi-socialist programs were in place, the American dream was far more achievable than now?

You respond with emotion about your grandparents. Fine. But that doesn't change the facts. If upward mobility is now restricted, it's certainly not from free market forces, because we have less of a free market than we used to. So why?

And stop putting words in my mouth, Dave. When did I ever say that all poor people are lazy, or ahve no dreams? They ahve plenty of dreams, but because of all the restriction son free enterprise, if they moved here today they would have much less of a chance of suceeding here.

But thanks for reading what I said instead of seeing one little bit and reacting with emotion instead of anaysis.

Another thing. I lvoe immigration, it's what makes this country great. Did your grandaprents come over legally? Awesome, so did mine. It's the illegal immigrants that I ahve a problem with. That's the problem with you and so much of the left. It's allabsolutes. If I don't like illegal immigration then I'm a racist who hates all immigrants. if I don't like welfare and people who are a drain on society, then I hate everyone who is poor. The world is not black and white, Dave. And stop putting words in my mouth. You keep attacking me for all these things i never aid or even thought.

Dave, I can't tell if you are a liberal who is poor and has a big heart or a liberal who is rich and lazy.
