I'm so sick of old people talking about how my generation has no loyalty to our employers. The fact is, we don't, but only because the employers have no loyalty to us. Mine act ually does, and I plan to be loyal to them, at least for a good while, but most companies skimp on the benefits for their normal employees as much as possible, and then give out huge bonuses to execs, even when the company is losing money. That sort of behavior does not engender much loyalty. So the next time some ignorant old fogey is whining about how young people have no loyalty, please remind them that it is the CEOs and corporate leaders of their generation that changed the corporate culture to such that drives away would-be loyal employees.

It was the baby boomers who started the trend of switching jobs. The average boomer will work for 5 companies in their lifetime. The average X'er will work for 12. But Boomers were the ones who changed the rules. Many companies realize the fact their employees don't stay long and are adjusting their benefits to reflect that. Look for companies to create alot more time based incentives to people. Like my company recently did away with the pension plan for anyone under 40. We got to keep the benefits we had accrued to date, but we no longer accrue new benefits. To make up for it they increased their match to our 401k contributions. Now they match 100% up to 4% and they instituted a time based match. 1-5 years they match another 1%, 5-10 is 2% and 10+ is 3%. So in my situation now they are matching 6% of my pay into my 401k. That's money I can take with me from job to job.

Oh don't get me started on employer loyalty! I could go on and on about how my former employer acted like the loyalty of their employees was the ONLY thing that really mattered, and yet they were the farthest thing from loyal to me. They are actually suing me for being disloyal! Watch out, it could happen to you...
