I just wanted to say "Bravo!" to the people of the Minutemen project. If you're not aware, this is a group of US citizens who are frustrated with the permiability of our southern border and decided to do something about it. Despite being called vigilantes by President Bush, they are in no way taking the law into their own hands. They caught 18 illegals trying to jump the border this weekend. What did they do? They didn't beat them, or punish them, they simply saw them, called the authorities, and got out of the way. The ACLU is saying that they are violating civil rights. In what way is reporting lawbreakers a violation of civil rights? By that logic, people who call the police with information on a shooting are violating the shooters' civil rights.

I don't disagree with the intent of what this group is doing. But you should know they make a lot of people very nervous, including local police, the border patrol itself, and other volunteer groups that patrol the border. The difference with the Minutemen is 1) that many of them are arming themselves and 2) that the increased press coverage may attract the nutjobs to the organization. Other volunteer groups patrolling the border are afraid, I think, that this group will get enough negative press to jeopardize what they already do quietly. Anything to bring attention to the problem is a good thing, to me. The law is flagrantly being broken down there every day, and the Mexican government encourages it. It's sickening that no one seems to care, including our Republican national leadership, the party that is supposed to care about keeping our borders intact.
But yeah, I do worry that like any good cause, it will attract whackos and bring down the whole thing, which in the end may make it even easier to sneak over the border.
